What is Agent Observability?

Agent observability is the practice of recording and analyzing what AI agents do once they are deployed: which agents exist, who runs them, which tools and data sources they touch, what each run cost, and where they fail. It extends classic software observability (logs, metrics, traces) to systems that choose their own actions.

The usual starting point is a gateway or proxy between agents and the tools they call, often MCP servers. Every session and tool call is logged to a central store, which gives security, platform and finance teams one view of agent activity across the company.

Key Characteristics

  • Inventory: Discovering every agent in use, including local MCP clients and agent products employees signed up for on their own.
  • Risk mapping: Ranking agents by the tools they hold and the data they can reach, since an over-provisioned agent has a larger blast radius.
  • Behavioral baselines: For well-scoped agents, flagging runs that use tools outside the agent's normal range.
  • Permission right-sizing: Using an agent's past tool calls to suggest access it never uses and can lose.
  • Reliability and cost tracking: Spotting tools that keep erroring, retry loops, and spend spikes after a switch to a more expensive model.

Why Agent Observability Matters

Rules written up front can't anticipate every context in which an agent acts. Observing real behavior is how organizations learn what to restrict, which agents to review first and where money is being wasted. As agents begin to outnumber employees, the activity log becomes the main control surface for running them safely.

  • Agent Transcript - The per-run record that observability aggregates
  • Agent Sprawl - The proliferation problem observability makes visible
  • Prompt Injection - A key threat that monitoring helps detect
  • AI Gateway - The routing layer where much of this telemetry is collected
