What is Product-Led Growth?
Product-led growth is a strategy where users discover, try, pay for and recommend a product without a sales team in the loop. Superhuman, Wispr Flow and Fyxer are typical examples. The product's "aha" moment, paywall and referral loop do the selling.
Why It Matters for AI Work
Matt Swulinski argues that PLG still matters when AI agents pick tools on a company's behalf: an agent researching options will favor products with clear self-serve funnels and documentation, so the same discipline that converts humans now serves agent buyers. He also stresses that PLG products often win enterprise revenue through self-service adoption before any account executive exists.
How It Works in Practice
- Shorten time to the "aha" moment, then place the paywall right after it
- Tie referrals to usage limits so sharing feels tangible (give a month, get a month)
- Validate early with paid ads once conversion tracking sends clean signals
- Broaden profiles beyond the first ideal customer to avoid a finite-audience plateau
