About Jacob Lauritzen

Jacob Lauritzen is the CTO of Legora, the legal AI company founded in Stockholm (YC 2024, originally named Leya) that sells an agentic workspace to law firms and in-house legal teams in Europe and the US. He joined Legora as head of engineering and later became CTO. Before Legora he founded Firmnav, which used data mining and machine learning to help private equity investors and M&A advisers find targets.

He leads Legora's product engineering, including its legal agent, Tabular Review, Lists, Intake and the Word add-in, and its evals team of engineers and lawyers. He has spoken at AI Engineer and appeared on 20VC and Latent Space.

Career Highlights

  • CTO of Legora, previously head of engineering
  • Founder of Firmnav, a deal-sourcing tool for private equity and M&A advisers
  • Grew Legora's engineering team to about 100 engineers by late 2026

Notable Positions

On Building Without Traces

Law firm data mostly belongs to their clients, so Legora's engineers can't look at what users do. Lauritzen's answer is an evals team of engineers and lawyers that builds synthetic environments approximating real projects, plus cheap online checks and failure-mode classification in production. See Agent Evaluation.

Legora's hardest hire is a lawyer with a few years in big law and often a CS degree. These legal engineers configure the product for clients without writing code; forward deployed engineers handle what configuration can't.

On Primitives Over Features

Lauritzen once told the company it would stay at 20 engineers. Legora now has about 100 and he says it feels too small, so he focuses on a few flexible primitives (Lists, projects, the agent, Tabular Review) that let a small team ship many products.

On Post-Training

Legora doesn't try to train its own main agent model. It post-trains open-weight models only for bounded tasks, such as fan-out legal research, where cost and latency matter more than frontier intelligence.

Key Quotes

  • "We can't look at any traces basically. We can't look at any data because it's all super confidential." (on Legora's core constraint)
  • "Legal engineers configure the product as a power user would. They don't write code." (on staffing client work)
  • "It went from like 70% to like 99%. It's just like we did nothing and like, great." (on a model release fixing citations)
