About Zach Lloyd

Zach Lloyd is the founder and CEO of Warp, a terminal turned open source development environment for agents. Before Warp he was a chief engineer at Google, where he led the development of Google Docs. He has worked as an engineer for over 20 years and says he has not written a line of code himself in the last six months.

Warp began as a terminal with built-in agents and open-sourced its code after five years of closed development. It has over 60,000 GitHub stars, hundreds of contributors and over 800,000 active developers. Lloyd's current focus is automating the whole development lifecycle, which Warp runs in public at build.warp.dev.

Key Ideas

  • Factory engineering: Engineers will build and manage the software factories that produce the product, not the code itself.
  • Open source as strategy: When cloning software is trivial, building in the open earns ecosystem and brand advantages, made manageable by agent triage and review.
  • Self-improving loops: Observer agents that learn from human corrections and improve the agents doing the work.
  • Humans at touch points: Taste, spec approval and product review stay human.
