The Factory Engineering Thesis
Lloyd's progression runs from chat and autocomplete, to interactive agents at a terminal, to automation. In the third phase the engineer's output is the factory: triage, spec, implementation, review, verification and monitoring agents, plus the feedback loops that improve them.
What Changes
- Work: Process engineering and meta-engineering replace writing code by hand.
- Metrics: Output per unit of human time and token cost become the numbers to improve.
- Skills that matter: Adaptability, critical thinking, and understanding systems and specs well enough to judge agent output.
- Taste: Human product judgment is the safeguard against a factory that produces things nobody needs.
Tension
Lloyd says most companies should not build heavy factory infrastructure themselves and should focus on their core product, but that tuning a factory to their domain remains real engineering.
